Activities

Although a small non-for-profit non-governmental organization started in 2020, as healthcare professionals committed to the health of both people and the Ocean, we have been involved in many diverse activities. All of these activities have been co-created with collaborative partnerships, including the UK NHS (National Health Service), academic institutions, grassroots environmental and human health groups, local communities, and international policy groups.

Some of these activities include:

  • Working with NHS England’s Sustainable Procurement Forum, NHS suppliers, and the Aspen Institute to support the delivery of coZEV (Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels) and accelerate the transition to zero-emission maritime shipping.
  • Highlighting the importance of biodiversity, sustainability and equity for the practices and future of Healthcare sector among the Medical Royal Colleges for healthcare professionals. Biodiversity, climate change and health – UK Health Alliance on Climate Change.
  • Contributing to international policy reports as medical professional experts including the recent Ocean Panel Blue Paper on Oceans and Human Health.
  • Championing co-creation with local communities, healthcare practitioners, and wildlife organizations to promote green-blue prescriptions through sustainable interactions with the ocean and other water systems.
  • Collaborating in research aimed at furthering understanding of the impact of commonly used medicines and other pharmaceutical wastes on water and ocean health, and strategies to mitigate and reduce their impact (Pharma Pollution Hub).
  • Co-creating Nature Positive curricula for healthcare professionals in collaboration with the UK Centre for Sustainable Healthcare funded by RSK.
  • Exploring the significance of water in sustainable primary care. Environmentally Sustainable Primary Care.
  • Working with Bristol Medical School on their Turning the Tide exhibition, exploring water’s role in sustaining health for our global and community futures.
  • Writing articles for world anaesthesia news educating on practical actions that can be taken to improve sustainability in anaesthesia.

Together, we have delivered well over 100 presentations since we formed. We have included a sampling of the talks that we have been invited to give on healthcare, ocean and human health over the past few years.
